Experience The Turtle Hatchery

Sea turtles are extraordinary creatures that have roamed our oceans for over 100 million years. Unfortunately, mostly due to human interference such as poaching, beach development, and fishing, the sea turtle population is drastically declining. Presently there are seven species of sea turtles that exist, three are classified as endangered and the others as critically endangered. A fascinating fact about sea turtles; the coast of Sri Lanka has been a nesting ground to five of the seven species for many years and presently you can experience these five species visiting Sri Lanka during the nesting seasons. The five sea turtle species who visit our beautiful coastal area are the Green Turtle, Olive Ridley, Hawksbill, Loggerhead and the giant Leatherback which is the largest sea turtle species in the world. Hikkaduwa, Habaraduwa, Kosgoda, and Tangalle are a few of the main coastal cities know to be the nesting land for the sea turtles.

The Fortress Resort & Spa is one of the few establishments around the world that strives to protect these amazing creatures from becoming extinct. We continuously find ways to assist local turtle hatchery owners to save and protect sea turtles visiting the coast of Sri Lanka. Guests can also be a part of this incredible venture and save the lives of many innocent sea turtles by joining our resorts “Relax and Release Project”. Not only will you be able to get up close to turtle hatchling but also get to release the adorable baby turtles into the ocean!
